The decline in passenger arrivals at Ben-Gurion Airport intensified in the first week of August, Israel Airports Authority statistics showed Tuesday, as the war in the North continues to affect summer travel plans to Israel.
The IAA reported that 101,699 passengers arrived at the airport in the week of August 1-7, representing a 17.2% drop from the parallel period last year. Similarly, the number of outgoing passengers was down 7.9% from the 2005 week to 108,255. Total passenger traffic through the airport was 12.6% lower than last year at 209,954 during the week.
Since the start of the conflict in the North just about one month ago, the rising trend of passengers to Israel seen over the last two years took a dramatic turn and resulted in an 8.2% drop in arrivals for July, despite the fact that the fighting broke out half-way through the month. Combined inbound and outgoing passengers dropped 4.8% from July 2005 levels.
The IAA had forecast a 10% growth for July and August prior to the breakout of violence in the North.
