For the first time since turning professional, Shahar Pe’er is expected to miss next week’s Israel national championships as she continues her recovery from a foot injury.
Pe’er’s 2013 season was cut short in September, when she was diagnosed with a partial tear of her foot’s plantar fascia. However, she is still set to end the year at No. 76 in the world rankings after plummeting all the way down to No. 179 in late June.
The 26-year-old won her sixth national title in the past seven years and eighth overall with a win over Julia Glushko last December.
But she is unlikely to be defending her title and appears set to skip the upcoming championships – which begin in Ra’anana next Sunday – in order to continue her recovery at the Sanchez Casal Academy in Barcelona.
Pe’er will be escorted on the WTA Tour in 2014 by Spaniard Eduardo Nicolas from the Sanchez Casal Academy and is set to begin her season at the Shenzhen Open in China on December 29.
The Australian Open will get underway in Melbourne on January 14.
