Brazil's Senate begins session to vote on Rousseff's removal

Brazil's Senate opened a session on Wednesday to vote on whether to remove suspended President Dilma Rousseff from office for breaking budgetary rules, the culmination of an impeachment process that has paralyzed Brazilian politics for nine months.

If two-thirds of the 81 Senators vote to convict the left-leaning Rousseff, as widely expected, her conservative former vice president Michel Temer will be sworn to serve out the remainder of her term through 2018. Senate aides said the verdict could be decided in two to three hours.
