Ebola 'huge, urgent global problem,' says UN Chief

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon marked the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty with a heartfelt speech in New York on Friday.

While some progress has been made to stop poverty, one in five people in developing nations still live on less than $1.25 a day.

"Where poverty and inequality are entrenched, instability and conflict are far more likely to erupt," Ban said, urging the international community to step up efforts to combat the global phenomenon.

Turning to the Ebola outbreak – which he termed a threat "not only to health, but to economic progress" and efforts being made in the region to curb poverty – he called for an urgent, global response to the "'huge and urgent global problem."
