Education Minister Shai Piron gave an early morning interview with Israel Radio and talked about reforms planned for the new academic year.
Piron said the first two weeks of school would focus on the 50-day conflict in Gaza and include classes on co-existence and racism.
He congratulated teachers, principles and school workers as classes were set to begin, calling them the "heroes of our culture" and the "future" of the country.
He then wished students a successful academic year and encouraged residents of the South, wishing them a year of quiet and calm.
