Polling station staff were getting croissants for breakfast on Sunday as the sun rose over Paris on election day for the first round of France's presidential race.

Centrist Emmanuel Macron narrowly leads a tight race ahead of far-right nationalist candidate Marine Le Pen.

Sunday's voting will be followed by a runoff on May 7 between the top two candidates.
