Garbage trucks to get greener

Garbage truly are on their way to becoming more eco-friendly after the Environmental Protection Ministry and Keren Kayemeth LeIsrael-Jewish National Fund announced on their plan to put emission filters on 500 diesel-powered garbage trucks throughout the country.

The filters will be placed over the trucks' exhaust pipes and will be able to filter out 97 percent of the "cancer-causing" fumes emitted from diesel trucks, according to the Ministry, and will cost NIS 10 million.

This initiative is part of a wider program to establish "clean air zones" in the downtown and residential areas in cities across the country in order to cut air pollution. In these zones, polluting vehicles will not be allowed to drive during certain times during the day, unless they are equipped with exhaust filters.
