Increased punishment for destroying flags passes early vote

The Knesset approved in a first reading overnight Monday a bill increasing the punishment for insulting the state flag or symbol to up to three years in prison, instead of one year, and a fine of NIS 58,400 instead of 300 lirot.
MK Nava Boker (Likud) said she proposed the bill after seeing demonstrations in Israel in which people burned Israeli flags and were not prosecuted. “Burning the flag is an aggressive act and incitement against the government,” she said.
