Olmert asks for clemency

President Reuven Rivlin’s office confirmed on Tuesday evening that a request for clemency had been received from former prime minister Ehud  Olmert who has served two weeks short of twelve months of a 19 months prison sentence.
Even without the request, Olmert’s sentence would have been reduced for good behavior, and in all probability, he would be released in the summer.
He has already been granted brief furloughs since his incarceration and has had many visitors, most of them lawyers, purporting to be his legal counsel, when in fact they were personal friends.
Among those friends were American attorneys Alan Dershowitz and Rudy Giuliani who each said afterwards that they had found Olmert to be in god spirits.
A statement from the President’s office indicated that there will be no special treatment with regard to Olmert’s request. It will be dealt with by the relevant authorities in the same way as every other request of this kind.
