Professor Irad Malkin to receive Israel Prize for general historical research

Professor Irad Malkin of Tel Aviv University will be awarded the Israel Prize in general historical research Education Minister Shai Piron announced by on Sunday.
Piron approved the recommendation of the prize committee headed by Professor Miriam Jordan and offered praise to the professor.
“Professor Malkin made a breakthrough in identifying Sparta as a marine superpower. His second significant contribution is the study of Greek migration and settlement. He applied innovative research methods and also contributed to the field of historical methodology by integrating with it new methodologies such as the theory of ‘networking,’” the Israel Prize committee wrote.
The Israel Prize is largely regarded as the state's highest honor. It is presented annually on Independence Day in a state ceremony in Jerusalem in the presence of the president, the prime minister, the Knesset speaker and the Supreme Court president.
