Thousands of people took to the streets on Saturday in Spain's northern coastal city of San Sebastian to show their support for the independence of Euskadi and Catalonia.

The rally was organized by EH Bildu, a far-left, Basque nationalist and pro-independence political coalition active in the Spanish autonomous communities of Basque Country and Navarre.

Activists started their march at Good Shepherd Square where they held a banner with the motto "A whole nation on the move with Catalonia and democracy," waved Basque and Catalan flags and chanted slogans in favor of independence.

EH Bildu's general coordinator, Arnaldo Otegi, and representatives of all coalition parties including Harkaitz Rodríguez (Sortu), Mikel Goenaga (EA), Ainhoa Behola (Aralar) and Ayem Oskoz (Alternatiba) led the crowd.

Albert Bertran and Mireia Boya, Catalan MPs from the Popular Unity Candidacy (CUP), a left, pro-Catalan independence political party active in the Catalan Countries in Spain also joined the march, adding that they have been "infinitely grateful" for the support they have received from the Basque people.

Boya stressed that it is not only "important" to win the referendum in Catalonia on October 1, but also to "defend its outcome".

"From Catalonia, we are definitely grateful for this support from the Basque people. On October 1, as you know, we have a referendum on self-determination. It is important to win it, but it is also important to defend the outcome. We also have support from other peoples of Spain from an internationalist perspective, and especially from that of the Basques. Today we're here and we will continue from October 2," said Boya.
