Legislation that will freeze the retirement age for women at 62 was prepared for its second and third reading in the Knesset Committee for Welfare, Labor and Health on Wednesday. After passing, the bill will head to the Knesset plenum for final approval.
Submitted by Meretz MK Ilan Gilon together with Likud MK Haim Katz and several other MKs from across the political spectrum, the legislation comes as a direct challenge to a Finance Ministry recommendation to increase the women’s retirement age in stages from 62 to 67 to bring it in line with that of men.The proposal, which was presented earlier this year, has been sharply criticized by women’s rights groups who point out that current gender inequalities in the work place must be addressed first, before discussing equality for men and women at the retirement level.
