Livni initiative to give inheritance rights to gay couples
New version of the inheritance law reads: "A couple living as a family in a joint household."

Inheritance laws will apply to same-sex couples, according to a bill approved by the Ministerial Committee for Legislation Sunday.The proposal by Justice Minister Tzipi Livni changed the wording of inheritance laws, which was “a man and a woman who live as a family in a joint household.”The new version reads “a couple living as a family in a joint household.”“Inheritance laws will no longer discriminate between people in love and types of couples,” Livni said following the vote. “The law now says that the assets of the deceased go to the person with whom he shared his life, whether it was straight or gay love.”According to Livni, the law originally had a more narrow definition because “society was different and less liberal, but Israel in 2014 is a very open and welcoming society that recognizes different kinds of love.”
