Israel Police officers taking part in an aid delegation to Haiti marked Rabin memorial day on Wednesday at a joint Israeli-Italian UN base in the capital of Porte-au-Prince.
The Italian assistance force requested to take part in the memorial and lowered its national flag to half mast.
Captain Julio Minstora of the Italian assistance force lit the memorial candle, while Dep.-Cmdr. Meir Namir, head of the Israeli delegation, spoke at the event.
Speaking at the Rabin Center in Tel Aviv on Wednesday, Israel Police Insp.-Gen. David Cohen said violent crime continued to pose a threat to Israeli democracy.
"We identify complex threat on the very foundation of democracy...violent crime, severe and organized crime, combined with a decreased respect for the law and state institutions form a real threat on
Israel's democratic character," Cohen warned.
"The police is working all year round in an intensive manner to enforce the law against violent offenses, and high standard have been set in this regard," he added.
