More Americans than Israelis support Iran strike

Surveys find only 43% of Israelis support striking Iran's nuclear facilities, while 62% of Americans would back military action.

A series of recent polls has shown that more Americans than Israelis support an Israeli military strike on Iran's nuclear facilities.

According to a Knesset Channel poll to be released Thursday, 50 percent of Israelis believe the IDF should not attack Iranian nuclear reactors, even if diplomatic attempts to solve the problem fail. Only 43% support such a strike.

  • World powers to Iran: Open military site for IAEA

A Reuters/Ipsos polled released on Tuesday, however, showed that 62% of Americans would back Israel taking military action against Iran if there were evidence that Tehran is building nuclear weapons.

A majority, 56%, would also support US military action against Iran, even if it led to higher gasoline prices, while 39% opposed.

The Knesset poll also found that 78% of the Israeli public believes a military strike on Iran would postpone Iran's acquisition of a nuclear weapon by several years; only 16% believe it will eliminate its nuclear capability altogether.

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said Wednesday that he is not prepared to accept a situation in which Iran, which backs terrorist groups in Gaza, becomes a nuclear power.

US President Barack Obama has said all options are on the table in dealing with Iran's nuclear program.

Reuters and Jpost.com staff contributed to this report.
