Iconic Jewish comedian Joan Rivers was rushed to Mount Sinai hospital in New York on Thursday after she stopped breathing during surgery, entertainment website TMZ reported.
Mount Sinai gave no details on the condition of the 81-year-old Brooklyn-born celebrity but said it would provide an update as it becomes available.
"Her family wants to thank everybody for their outpouring of love and support," said hospital spokesman Sid Dinsay in a statement.
According to TMZ, Rivers, who is 81-years-old, was undergoing a throat procedure on her vocal chords when she stopped breathing.
The NYPD told TMZ earlier on Thursday that Rivers was in critical condition but Ken Baker, an entertainment journalist at E! News, which features Rivers as host of its show "Fashion Police," said on his Twitter account that Rivers was in stable condition.
During Operation Protective Edge in Gaza this past summer, Rivers voiced unequivocal support for Israel
, saying it had a right to defend itself against Hamas rocket fire.
"Let me just tell you if New Jersey was firing rockets into New York we would wipe them out. If we heard they were digging tunnels from New Jersey to New York we would get rid of Jersey," Rivers told a TMZ reporter in July.
