Wine, nature, and history enthusiasts will be able to celebrate the weekend of Tu B'Av at one of the most unique spots in the Negev. On Thursday, July 30, the annual wine event will take place at Ovdat National Park, initiated by the Ramat Hanegev Regional Council, the Nature and Parks Authority, and the Merage Foundation Israel.
The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. among the ruins of the ancient Nabataean city. Highlights include wine tastings from a selection of Negev wineries, guided tours of ancient winepresses and heritage vineyards, acoustic music performances, and a main sunset show at one of the site's most beautiful locations.
One of the evening's main attractions will be a tour of the Winepress Trail and Ovdat's heritage vineyard, where ancient grape varieties discovered during archaeological excavations in the region are currently being re-cultivated. Among the re-planted varieties are Dabouki, Sariki, and Be'er, heritage species that were cultivated in the Negev Highlands approximately 1,500 years ago. The tours will be led by Dr. Lior Schwimmer, heritage officer for the Southern District at the Nature and Parks Authority, who will discuss the preservation and restoration process and the importance of the wine industry during the Nabataean period.
In the wine complex, visitors will be able to get a firsthand look at the developing desert wine industry through tastings from a selection of local wineries. The event also takes place against the backdrop of recent international recognition received by Negev wines, with the granting of an official Geographical Indication label to the region, a designation that places the Negev among the world's recognized wine regions.
Alongside the wine, visitors will enjoy acoustic music performances taking place across the site, a seating area with light food available for purchase, and an arts and crafts corner for children and families operated in cooperation with the Desert Magic initiative.
Admission prices: NIS 31 for adults, NIS 16 for children and senior citizens. Entry is free for Matmon subscription holders.
Participation requires purchasing tickets in advance. Free shuttle services will operate during the event between the lower foyer and the upper section of the site.
