That’s Lifestyle: Dancing all the way to Harlem

Lifestyle Editor wraps up week: Haredim light up the big screen; Holon Fashion Week; Jerusalem offers fall events.

It’s been a relatively quiet week at the JPost.com Lifestyle section as we all recover from the High Holy Days and enjoy the last few days of summer, or weeks as the case may be in this part of the world.

The past week focused on local arts and culture. The Jerusalem Post’s film critic Hannah Brown gave us her verdict on one of the most talked about Israeli films in the recent years, Fill the Void. If her review is anything to go by, the film about a young haredi (ultra-Orthodox) girl in Tel Aviv may well pick up some more awards to add to the collection.

It’s not just films that have been creating a buzz on these shores recently; theater options have been a plenty. The rollicking Broadway show Ain’t Misbehavin, which takes audiences back to the jazz era of the 1920s and ‘30s, is set to light up stages across the country.

Maxim Reider spoke with the founder of the country’s veteran and arguably leading contemporary music ensemble to talk about their 22nd season, while Ori Lenkinski caught up with Argentinean choreographer Inaki Urlezaga whose company will present a ballet version of La Traviata in Tel Aviv.

With film, theater, music and dance covered, Barry Davis gave us an insight into another cool event taking place this week: Holon Fashion Week. It may not quite be on the scale of fashion weeks in New York or Paris, but the line up is pretty impressive.

That’s the Tel Aviv area. Not wanting those over the hills in Jerusalem to feel as if there’s not much going on in their neck of the woods, Loren Minsky was on hand with some great ideas in the capital. Her Top 5 list of upcoming autumn events in Jerusalem ran the gamut from Medieval knights to Tony-award winning musicals. Who said Jerusalem was boring?

Moving on from culture to our other favorite pastime - food. Neria Barr offered up some great recipes inspired by the restaurant Helena in the Old Caesarea Port, while the team at gourmetkoshercooking.com had some easy recipes that are perfect for this time of year.

I’ll be away in sunny Manchester visiting family next week but but that doesn’t mean there won’t be some great features to look forward to. Readers can expect Tanya Powell-Jones’s tips for a day of sightseeing in Jewish Berlin, Natalie Marx’s advice on how to lower cholesterol and Joe Yudin’s insights on the ancient city of Megiddo.
