From Herzl to Bibi: Where Did the Vision Go Wrong?

My Dear Prime Minister,

I’ve known you for over thirty years.  The first time we met, you were the Israeli Ambassador to the UN.  You were young, charismatic and ambitious.  Your first true love was to Eretz Israel.

You are the first and only prime minister born in Israel after the founding of the State and you have worked hard to build a country that is only one year older than you.  So now it is hard to believe that we have grown up, our heads full of grey hairs; our generation is now over 60.  We may be regarded as seniors, but our country is still very, very young.  You have tried your best to help grow this country, but now fear is taking over.

Why am I writing you now?  We just finished celebrating the 150th year since the birth of Theodor Herzl.  Herzl, like you, spent his life devoted to developing Israel. Herzl died at 44, and unlike him, you are already a grandfather at 62 and G-d willing, will live a very long life.

Herzl was, amongst other things, a playwright and a visionary.  He made others trust him.  He was such a good actor that he could hide his panic in order to survive as a leader of the Zionism.  Unfortunately, the same cannot be said for you.  You are letting fear take you over and you cannot hide your pure panic. Shaking. Sweating. Panic.

You have stopped being a leader and you, yourself, are being lead.  I do not doubt that you still love your country, but I believe you love yourself more.  By now, you thought that you would be a Noble Peace Prize recipient like Rabin, Peres and Obama.  Why is it, that you have not achieved the same global recognition for your work?

You have shown yourself to be an actor.  So, as an actor, why can’t you take the role as a leader instead of the role of a defeated man, run by a neurotic wife, scared of his own shadow, wanting to be loved by a nation who does not believe in you or have faith in your leadership capabilities?  Mr. Prime Minister, we know you don’t know what you are doing.  You spend the money of taxpayers without any passion and you are getting further and further away from reality.

The voyage from Basel to Jerusalem was not that long ago in history, and it is still within our lifetime.  We owe it to the next generation, in our lifetime, to give Haaretz Israel to them on a silver platter.  I don’t believe in a two-state solution plan.

Right now the stage spotlight is only you and you are moving from Act 1 to Act 2, improvising non-stop.  Herzl passed the torch onto another great Zionist leader who would continue the legacy of Israel and Zionism, who will be your predecessor?  When I look to the future I see a torch, falling into the darkness.  This pillar of fire is fading, the Jews are blending, they are losing their Judaism and soon Israel will just become another country in the Middle East.

Mr. Prime Minister, please return to the time when you were an idealistic UN Ambassador, with lightening in his eyes, full of passion in his heart and where what you said is what you meant.

You are our leader.  Please give us a change and give us a break.
