European Jewish Congress welcomes incoming British PM Theresa May

The European Jewish Congress on Wednesday welcomed the UK's incoming British Prime Minister Theresa May, who swept to power after her rival Andrea Leadsom dropped out of the Conservative Party race Monday.

“We look forward to working with Prime Minister May and the new British Government and leadership to continue our cooperation against the scourges of anti-Semitism, racism, xenophobia and intolerance,” Dr. Moshe Kantor, President of the EJC, said.

“The UK is in a challenging period and we hope that the new leadership will seek to bring together the disparate parts of the nation together in a spirit of unity and fraternity,” he stated.

The Tories were left looking for a new leader after Prime Minister David Cameron stepped down, immediately after the loss of his Remain campaign in the Brexit referendum last month. May will now be tasked with steering Britain out of the European Union, though she herself has been a proponent of staying in the Union. She was one of the longest-serving Home Secretaries in British history.

"Mrs. May has demonstrated, throughout her role as Home Secretary, a strong commitment to fighting anti-Semitism and the continued threat of international terrorism," noted Kantor. "Moreover, she has sought close contacts with our colleagues in the United Kingdom and has always shown an attentive ear to issues affecting the British Jewish community.”

May is widely regarded by the Jewish community as a friend of Israel.
