Germany has accepted a UN request to help destroy the remnant of Syria's chemical weapons on its own soil, AFP reported on Thursday.

The move is an attempt to speed up the elimination of Syria's arsenal by June 30, the Germany Foreign and Defense Ministries said in a joint statement.

"The government is willing and able to destroy in Germany remnants created in the course of irreversibly neutralizing chemical weapons from Syria and which resemble industrial waste," the statement said.

GEKA, a state-owned company in northern Germany, is tasked with the destruction "in full compliance with environmental regulations."
