Former US deputy secretary of defense Lawrence Korb is set to arrive in Israel
on Saturday night to advance efforts to bring about the release of convicted
Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard from US federal prison.
Korb, who was deputy
secretary of defense in the Reagan administration at the time of Pollard’s
arrest in 1985, will meet Israeli leaders after speaking in recent days to
American officials. He is part of the American Progress think tank that is
considered close to the administration of US President Barack Obama. “I feel a
personal obligation to take action to end the Pollard episode,” Korb said. “It
is a tragedy that bothers me as an American.
Pollard broke the law and
needed to pay a price. But the lack of proportion in his punishment goes against
the values I believe in as an American.”
