Michelle Obama's trip to Jordan delayed by sandstorm

A sandstorm darkened the skies above the Jordanian capital on Wednesday, delaying the arrival of the US first lady, Michelle Obama.

Over the past 48 hours, the country had witnessed cloudy skies and intermittent showers and thunderstorms.

Local media reported that Royal Jordanian Airline diverted seven incoming flights to Queen Alia International Airport to other airports in the region due to low visibility on Tuesday (November 5).

Obama, due to fly in from Qatar, did not appear at her scheduled arrival time and the US embassy in Amman did not provide details of when she would be arriving.

Residents of Amman, having difficulty navigating through the dusty smog, said that the weather was unusual for the time of year.

"This weather is abnormal for the country. It's an unusual phenomenon, heavy dusts, rainfall laden with mud; this weather causes illnesses in the community. This is the first time we have seen this in the country," said Mohammed Zreigat, a local resident.

Obama is on a Middle East tour to promote her global education initiative for girls.

During her visit, she was expected to tour a school built by USAID funds and visit the historic sites in Petra.
