Protestors rally against racism after attack on Jaffa man

Issuing a call to fight racism in Tel Aviv and across Israel, a group of around 100 people gathered on the city's promenade on Monday, close to where an Israeli-Arab man was savagely beaten early Sunday morning by over a dozen youths, in what is being viewed as a racially-motivated crime.

The rally was attended by MKs including Dov Khenin (Hadash), Stav Shaffir (Labor), and Tamar Zandberg and Issawi Freij of Meretz.

Freij, a native of Kfar Qassem, said the attack on 40-year-old Hassan Ausruf was “a direct result of the political racism we are living with in Israel.”

Freij said such attacks “start at the top” and can be linked to statements by political leaders like Yair Lapid (Yesh Atid), who famously referred to Arab Mks as “Zoabis”, and that “for 65 years, since 1948, we've lived with this racism and this won't be the last incident.”

Freij also expressed agreement Jaffa youth activist Abed Abu Shehada, who said residents of the Arab sector live without a sense of personal security and that “police are just a private security company for the Jews, there are no police for the Arab sector.”
