Sa'adat, Barghouti call negotiations a failure, call for popular resistance

Jailed Palestinian leaders Marwan Barghouti and Ahmed Sa'adat called the peace negotiations between Israel and the Palestinian Authority "fruitless" in a report by Ma'an News Agency on Monday, and demanded the Palestinians seek unilateral recognition.

The two leaders of The Fatah's military wing renewed their calls to abandon negotiations in favor of a unilateral approach to seeking international recognition of a Palestinian State.

Barghouti, who is serving five consecutive life terms in Israel for terrorism, called on the Palestinian people to partake in "popular resistance" and urged for a reconciliation between the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank and Hamas in the Gaza Strip.

Sa’adat is serving a 30-year jail sentence in Israel for organizing the assassination of former tourism minister Rehavam Ze’evi in Jerusalem in 2001.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas asked US President Barack Obama, earlier in March, to pressure Israel into releasing both Sa'adat and Barghouti in return for extending peace talks past the April deadline.
