Sweden won't push debate over burqa ban in European Union

The new president of the European Union will not press for a debate among member nations over discussion about banning burqas and other Islamic garments, Swedish Justice Minister Beatrice Ask said on Tuesday. Sweden, which is now chairing the presidency of the union for six months, will not raise the debate because it has "enough to do" during its short term, the minister said. The 27-nation EU must not dictate an Islamic dress code, Ask said, adding that "the European Union is a union of freedom." The influx of Muslim immigrants has stirred debate in European countries about the wearing of headscarves and full-body robes in public places.
