UN chief says de Mistura to be new Syria mediator

UNITED NATIONS - UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon appointed veteran UN official Staffan de Mistura, a former UN special envoy to Afghanistan and Iraq, on Thursday to replace Lakhdar Brahimi as the international mediator seeking an end to Syria's civil war.
Diplomats, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the appointment on Wednesday.
De Mistura, a dual citizen of Italy and Sweden, has worked with the United Nations in Somalia, the Middle East, the Balkans, Nepal, Iraq and Afghanistan during the past 30 years. He was most recently the UN envoy in Afghanistan in 2010-2011.
