"The entire world has said more than once that it takes developments in Syria very seriously, developments which can be in negative directions," Vice Prime Minister Silvan Shalom told Israel Radio, reminding listeners that US President Barack Obama has warned Syrian President Bashar Assad of American action should his regime forces use chemical weapons.

Shalom said that steps must be taken to prevent any negative developments, but did not specify what those steps should be.

"The world, led by President Obama who has said this more than once, is taking all possibilities into account," Shalom said. "And of course any development in a negative direction would be something that needs stopping and preventing."

Meanwhile, Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon told Israel Radio that Israel will "not compromise on the security of the northern front."
