Opposition leader Shelly Yacimovich (Labor) brought another MK into her camp Tuesday, ahead of her party’s leadership primary next month.
MK Omer Bar-Lev (Labor) announced that he backs Yacimovich in the November 21 Labor leadership race, saying he has “no doubt that she has the leadership characteristics, the determination and the ability to lead the party as an active body with a decisive influence in diplomatic and social areas.”
Bar-Lev is the ninth of Labor’s 15 MKs to support Yacimovich, after Nachman Shai, Moshe Mizrahi, Miki Rosenthal, Stav Shaffir, Michal Biran, Itzik Shmuli and Knesset Economics Committee chairman Avishay Braverman. MKs Eitan Cabel and Erel Margalit support Yacimovich’s challenger, Isaac Herzog.
Labor secretary-general Hilik Bar and MK Binyamin Ben- Eliezer, who is running for president, and MK Merav Michaeli remained neutral.
“In the last year, I stood by Yacimovich in times of difficult decisions. I saw her deal with them, hear criticism and continue working toward her goals,” Bar-Lev stated.
Yacimovich thanked Bar- Lev, saying that he contributed from his experience in the military and in the private sector to politics and he exemplifies Labor’s values.
“MK Bar-Lev is a central partner in waving Labor’s diplomatic-security flag,” she said.
Herzog is launching his campaign in a major event in Tel Aviv Thursday. The Labor MK’s campaign plans to bus in activists from Kiryat Shmona, Haifa, Beersheba, Jerusalem, Ashkelon and Ashdod, and Julis and Yirka.
