Bayit Yehudi minister: Israel should re-think allowing women in IDF combat units

A religious Zionist lawmaker in the Israeli parliament caused a ruckus during a committee meeting on Sunday when he called for "reevaluating the integration of women in combat units."Uri Orbach, the Bayit Yehudi minister who holds the pensioner affairs portfolio in the Netanyahu government, made the remark during a committee hearing convened by the two most high-profile female ministers in the Israeli cabinet, Tzipi Livni and Limor Livnat.The committee was called to discuss the issue of under-representation of females in public sector jobs.Orbach's remark drew a rebuke from Yesh Atid MK Ronen Hoffman."The minister's call to reconsider allowing women to serve in combat is dark and primitive," he said. "The time has come for Minister Orbach to recognize the fact that there is no moral or practical basis for discriminating between men and women in the State of Israel."
