MK Danny Danon (Likud) plans to petition the Central Elections Committee to
prevent MK Haneen Zoabi (Balad) from running with her party for the 19th
Knesset, he announced on Sunday.
According to Danon, Zoabi has used her
parliamentary immunity to support terrorism and attacks on IDF
soldiers.
“There is no place for such an MK in the Knesset – she belongs
in jail,” Danon said.
The Likud MK sent a letter of inquiry to Central
Elections Committee chairwoman Judge Miriam Naor, ahead of an official petition,
which he plans to send after new committee members are chosen.
He cited
Zoabi’s participation in the June 2010 Gaza flotilla, as said she called for a
third intifada and continued terror against Israelis.
“She is a terrorist
disguised as an MK. It’s time to put an end to this and prevent Zoabi from
entering the Knesset,” Danon added.
According to Zoabi, the attempts to
stop her from running are akin to taking away citizens’ freedom to
vote.
“If one side of the political map, in this case the Right, wants to
determine who will run in an election and which other parties are legitimate,
citizens are only voting in the second round,” Zoabi said.
“That is not a
free vote.”
The Balad MK said the Right thinks their ideology is above
the law and everything else.
“This is not just a racist state, but a
dictatorship of one party, of consensus in different varieties. This is a
government in which the parties and the citizens are puppets,” she
added.
Zoabi also said that there is no legal reason to disqualify her,
and that Danon’s reasoning is ideological and political.
In addition,
Zoabi claimed that she did not harm any naval commandos who boarded the Mavi
Marmara Gaza flotilla ship, pointing out that none of them filed any complaints
against her.
