Meretz will decide on its Knesset list for the upcoming elections at a vote to
at the Tel Aviv Fairgrounds on Sunday evening.
The party put out a
statement on Saturday saying 1,000 central committee members were expected to
vote on the top 10 spots. Meretz currently has three seats in the 120- seat
parliament.
In its advertising campaign for the elections, Meretz has
portrayed itself as the country’s leading left-wing party and the natural home
for leftwing Israelis, with ads saying, “Our heart is on the Left” and
“Leftwingers go home (to Meretz)!”
On its website, the party says the elections
will see Meretz “become the major left-wing party in Israeli politics,
representing a worldview that strives for social justice, environmental justice,
equality for all citizens and an end to the Israeli-Palestinian
conflict.”
In October it announced that Isawi Farij, an Israeli-Arab
accountant from Kafr Kasim, will compete for a spot on the Knesset list.
Candidates also include Rabbi Ehud Bandel, former head of the Masorti
(Conservative Judaism) Movement in Israel, and Tel Aviv city councilwoman Tamar
Zandberg, who in October announced that she would be joining the party and
running in the upcoming primary.
Meretz is also the only party
guaranteeing gender equality on its Knesset list.
