Germany arrests Danish Nazi war criminal [p. 10]

The Simon Wiesenthal Center on Thursday welcomed the arrest in Germany of Nazi war criminal Soeren Kam, who is wanted for his role in the murder of a Danish journalist in Denmark during World War II. According to the SWC, Kam was a member of a unit of Danes who collaborated with Nazis in WWII. He is suspected of the murder of Danish journalist Carl Henrikclemmnsen and has been wanted by Denmark for some time. He was sentenced in absentia to life in prison in Denmark. In a statement issued in Jerusalem, the center's chief Nazi-hunter Dr. Efraim Zuroff noted the significance of the decision to arrest Kam and said it could mark the beginning of a series of extraditions of foreigners who had collaborated with the Nazis, committed serious crimes and subsequently fled to Germany, where they were granted citizenship, which protected them from prosecution in their native lands. The extraditions would take place under new EU guidelines. According to Zuroff: "The arrest of Kam is long overdue. It is high time that Germany cease protecting former Waffen-SS men who have fled prosecution in their countries of origin. "We are extremely hopeful that Kam will be extradited to Denmark to stand trial in the near future and that his will only be the first of many such extraditions." According to Zuroff, Holland has asked for the extradition of at least six Dutch citizens who fled to Germany after WWII.
