Romanian jazz trumpeter Emil Bizga will front an international lineup over the next few days when he performs in Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and Haifa. Bizga’s colleagues include Israeli saxophonist and educator Amikam Kimelman, Israeli pianist Katia Toobool, Australian- born bassist Simon Starr and internationally acclaimed Slovenian drummer Gasper Bertoncelj.Bizga’s style feeds off a wide range of sources, from his work with classical orchestras to stints in jazz big bands and quartet formats.Bizga also has a solid academic grounding, having gained master’s degrees both in classical trumpet and jazz trumpet, and has collaborated with the likes of Swedish classical trumpeter Hakan Hardenberger, and iconic American jazz trumpeter Wynton Marsalis.He has performed all over Europe, including at Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland and the Miles Davis Festival in Poland.Bizga’s eclectic range of musical reference points is reflected in his Acacia Flower album, which covers sounds that range from George Gershwin to Brazilian composer Antonio Carlos Jobim, Irish folk music and a score by nineteenth-century Romanian composer Ciprian Porumbescu.Bizga will perform at Brigham Young University, on Mount Scopus in Jerusalem, today at 8 p.m., at Shablul in Tel Aviv tomorrow at 10 p.m., and at The Studio Theater Beit Hecht in Haifa on Saturday at 9 p.m. For tickets and more information: (02) 625-6666 (Brigham Young University), (03) 546-1891 (Shablul) and (04) 841- 8411 (Haifa).
