St.-Sgt. Maj. Ihab Khatib’s mother had already lost a brother and sister. Now she has lost a son.
Her brother, an IDF officer, was killed 10 years ago in the Jordan Valley. Her sister was killed by a Katyusha during the Second Lebanon War.
Word of Khatib’s death spread almost immediately among his friends, who discreetly called his home in Maghar in the Galilee, to ask if he was there.
It was only in their calls to extended family members and members of the village that they expressed their more direct concern.
Khatib’s great-uncle Saliman, who was a taxi driver, said that as soon as he received a number of calls, he headed toward’s Khatib’s home.
He arrived only minutes before the IDF officer who had come to tell the family the bad news.
Khatib had been home for a few days of vacation and had left early that morning.
“He had a soul made of gold. He was modest and kind. He gave of himself to his family and the army,” Saliman told The Jerusalem Post.
“This is a heavy loss. It is the third tragedy to rock the family. Hisparents have taken it very hard,” said Saliman. He sighed and added,“But this was his fate.”
