Police chief commemorates fallen officers at Mt. Herzl

Insp.-Gen. Yohanan Danino speaks of 1,268 fallen officers since Israel's founding; "We owe them a huge debt," he says.

Israel Police Chief Insp.-Gen. Yochanan Danino attended a memorial service for the force’s 1,268 fallen officers since its founding at Mount Herzl in Jerusalem on Monday.
“Their faces and names represent all the parts of Israeli society. Their roles and ranks represent the variety of functions of the Israel Police,” Danino said.

“They all had a wish to ensure Israel’s existence, to safeguard Israel’s society, its character and strength, and that its citizens be protected in the streets and to live within secure borders,” he added. “We owe them a huge debt.”

The newly appointed police chief, who spoke at the police section of the Mount Herzl ceremony, said that remembering the sacrifices of the fallen “is an existential necessity in our small country, which cannot afford to allow itself to forget. We have the privilege and the obligation to remember.”
Looking ahead, Danino said, “We must have an intelligent police that knows how to prepare for all of the challenges and missions that are waiting for it. Above all, we must act as one body to serve the will of the nation and to earn its trust.”
On Independence Day, members of the public were invited by police to visit its academy in Kiryat Ata.
Danino said was warmed by the large number of youths who have expressed interest in carrying out their national service in border police ranks.
