Nahum Itzkovich, Jerusalem district psychologist of the Israel Employment Service and husband of The Jerusalem Post’s veteran health and science reporter Judy Siegel-Itzkovich, died peacefully in his sleep at their Jerusalem home on Friday. He was 62. He had suffered from serious complications of an autoimmune liver disease for the last eight months.
Aside from his wife, he leaves a son, Noam Nehemia (an electrooptics engineer and officer in the Israel Defense Forces); a daughter, Shira Rivka (a social worker); a son, Natan Hillel (an electronics engineering student at the Jerusalem College of Technology), his brother, Benny Itzkovich (a physical education teacher); and three small granddaughters from Noam and his wife Michal. His first cousin, Nachum Itzkovitz , is director-general of the Welfare and Social Affairs Ministry.
Itzkovich was born in the new capital to Holocaust survivors, David and Tova Itzkovich, five months after the founding of the state. After receiving a yeshiva education, he completed his BA and MA in educational and vocational psychology at the Hebrew University. He spent three decades in the Jerusalem branch of the government’s Employment Service, giving vocational counseling to thousands of people uncertain about what career to chose; he was often told by clients that his advice changed their lives.
Itzkovich was introduced to his wife through Yitzhak Navon, who was then the fifth President of the State of Israel and who recited a blessing at their wedding, as he did at Noam and Michal’s marriage. Nahum and Judy were happily married for 29 years and remained in touch with the former president and expressed their gratitude for his role.
Last January, Itzkovich was promoted to Jerusalem district psychologist of the Israel Employment Service and worked, despite much suffering, until a few short weeks before his passing.
His funeral was held on Friday.
The family will sit shiva at their home at 11 Rehov Nof Harim, apt. 2, Yefe Nof, in Jerusalem, condolence visits between 9 a,m, to 1 p.m., 4 to 9 p.m. until Thursday morning.
