A teenage girl from Nazareth was hospitalized in serious condition after a man
threw acid in her face on Tuesday morning.
Police arrested a 51-year-old
man shortly afterward who reportedly attacked the woman because she refused a
marriage proposal either from him or a member of his family.
Police said
the 15-year-old girl was lying in her bed when she heard a knock at her bedroom
window on Tuesday morning. When the girl opened the window the man threw acid in
her face and then fled the scene, Northern District Police spokesman Yehuda
Maman said.
A spokesman from Rambam Medical Center said the girl was in
stable condition under anesthesia and hooked up to a respirator in the
childrens’ emergency ward. The teen is suffering from wounds across her upper
body, and there is fear she could lose sight in one or both of her eyes. She is
also experiencing difficulty breathing since some of the acid entered her
mouth.
Nazareth Police chief Cmdr. Yossi Hamo said his officers have set
up a special task force to handle the case, which they are viewing with the
utmost severity.
