CITY NOTES: Carmel Gov’t Hospital holds informative seminar for lymphoma patients.

Senior physician at the Haifa hospital told patients that new drugs being produced today are made of advanced biological materials that will eliminate the disease with high efficacy.

Carmel Government Hospital last week held a seminar for lymphoma patients, the Local website reported, in which patients and their families were presented with new treatments for the disease.
Dr. Olga Wokovski, a senior physician at the Haifa hospital, reportedly told patients that new drugs being produced today are made of advanced biological materials, which contain antibodies that directly target the patient’s cells, thus eliminating the disease with high efficacy.
According to Local, Dr. Muna Blanc of the Carmel Institute defined the blood cancer for patients’ families, and Dr. Evelyn Shabad informed them about chronic lymphocytic leukemia and new methods of treatment. The patients and their relatives were also told about side effects of the treatments and how to deal with them, while taking into account risk factors.
Dr. Miriam Kwit, director of Carmel’s Institute of Hematology, was quoted as saying: “New treatments have changed the map of lymphoma in Israel and the world. We here at Carmel will continue to update our patients and their families on all that is new in relation to the disease, and will continue to provide them with the most professional and dedicated care possible in the world today.”
The seminar was run by the Israel Cancer Association in cooperation with the Roche company, which is leading a social health project for the 10th consecutive year.
Man treated after being shot in Haifa
A 20-year-old man from the town of Usfiya suffered a gunshot wound last weekend, when an unknown assailant fired at his car.
According to Israel Radio, the victim was sitting in his vehicle, which was parked in the Hadar area of Haifa, when the perpetrator shot him. The wounded victim then managed to reach Rambam Medical Center on his own, where he received treatment.
1 killed, 3 wounded in shooting in Jatt
One person was killed and three were wounded – two lightly and one moderately – by gunfire on a house in Jatt on Sunday night.
Police opened an investigation into the incident.

Rov Ha’ir party to found Tel Aviv’s first municipal gay youth center
Tel Aviv municipal party Rov Ha’ir announced last week that it will establish a new gay youth center in the city. The party stated it will be a direct continuation of the youth center program, led by Rov Ha’ir head and Deputy Mayor Asaf Zamir.
Since Zamir began the project five years ago, 18 youth centers have been founded in Tel Aviv, serving some 500 young people. The new gay youth center will be located on Shneur Zalman Street, next to the existing gay center in Gan Meir.
Rov Ha’ir explained that the need to establish such a center arose when it became clear that municipality’s gay community center couldn’t singlehandedly support the volume of youth activities taking place there. The new center will be used as a home as well as an activity and information center for gay youth for social groups, classes and lectures. It will also provide a base for support groups for gay, transgender, deaf and religious youth; meetings with prominent community members; and young leadership groups.
The center aims to strengthen the connections between the youth and the municipality, and to stand as a source of pride for young Tel Avivians and decision-makers.
2 nearly drown at Netanya beaches
A 70-year-old man lost consciousness on Sunday after almost drowning at Herzl Beach in Netanya, United Hatzalah reported. Its volunteers pulled the man out of the water and saved his life after performing a lengthy resuscitation. The paramedics then evacuated him to Laniado Medical Center in serious condition, sedated and on a respirator.
In a separate incident, a woman almost drowned near the city’s Blue Bay Beach, and was rescued from the water unconscious. United Hatzalah paramedics resuscitated her and evacuated her to the hospital in serious condition.
6 injured in car accident on Ayalon Highway in Rishon Lezion
Six people were injured following a collision involving two cars on the Ayalon Highway last weekend.
The accident took place near Rabin Boulevard in Rishon Lezion.
Five of the injured suffered minor injuries, and one suffered moderate injuries. MDA paramedics evacuated them to Assaf Harofeh Medical Center in Tzrifin.
Cyclist hit by car, killed near Petah Tikva
A cyclist was hit and killed by a car at the Hayarkonim junction near Petah Tikva on Monday morning, MDA said.
The driver suffered light injuries and was treated at the scene.
TA art conference to be held with simultaneous screening of NYC summit
This weekend, a mini-conference is set to be held at Artport Tel Aviv – the Center for Young Art, in honor of and in cooperation with the annual Creative Time conference held in New York at the same time. The event is set for Friday and Saturday, from 4 p.m. to midnight.
The international Creative Time conference, involving influential figures in the fields of political, social and activist art, will be screened live at Artport over the two days; a question-and-answer session will be held over Skype and refreshments will be provided.
The main issues expected to be covered during the local conference will include the social, political, economic and legal significance of urban-change processes; how to create new forms of civic engagement and participation in shaping the environment; whether artists can create change from within urban systems and influence the way they are run, or whether real change can only come from outside existing systems, as an act of protest.
The Center for Young Art is a nonprofit organization founded by Jason Arison, chairman of the Ted Arison Family Foundation.
The group states on its website that Arison’s vision for Artport Tel Aviv is “to be a home for emerging artists, a place that will be reflected upon as the turning point in the lives of talented artists, and to serve as a platform for an alternative artistic dialogue between the local contemporary art scene, international organizations and independent artists worldwide.”

Eilat water babies to gain two new attractions
Two new water-based attractions are set to grace Eilat’s landscape, the municipality announced last week, comprising a water park and a water ski park that will operate on an artificial lake. Both attractions will be built on an area between roads northwest of the Arava border crossing.
The joint committee of the Israel Lands Authority and the Tourism Ministry approved the extension for the two new attractions, as part of its aim to position Eilat as a city of tourism and international sport. Both programs are expected to be published in the first quarter of next year, and following their approval, their construction should take about a year.
The water park will be built next to the Arava Highway on an area of 11.1 hectares (27.4 acres), to the tune of $25 million. The complex will be open year-round, with water attractions open at least eight months of the year. The theme of the amusement center will be Jurassic Park, and will include life-sized figures of dinosaurs, 20 water slides, a professional surfboard facility, a play area, a water disco, a spa and restaurants.
The water ski park will be built on a 10.5-hectare (25.9-acre) area for $12m. The tourist complex will offer sport, recreation and relaxation, as well as a professional sport center. Within the complex, there will be an artificial lake covering 6 hectares (14.8 acres) that water skiers can use, alongside side beach sports and other water sports.
Beersheba man runs over, kills 4-year-old daughter
A man driving a car in Beersheba ran over and killed his four-year-old daughter on Sunday morning.
The father drove the girl to the hospital in critical condition, where she was pronounced dead shortly after.
Police were investigating the circumstances of the incident.
