The anti-Hamas Tamarod movement on Monday published the first public announcement by its spokesman, who identified himself as Eyad Abu Ruk.
Spokesmen for Tamarod (rebellion) have until now appeared in videos posted on Facebook and Youtube with their faces covered.
The movement, which has vowed to topple Hamas’s rule in the Gaza Strip, said in a video that Abu Ruk was the only person authorized to speak on its behalf.
The movement warned that it would punish anyone else who dares to speak on its behalf.
The movement stressed that it was an independent body with no political affiliation.
It said that in order to preserve its independence, it would not accept any financial aid from any party in the future.
Hamas officials have accused the movement of being affiliated with Israel, Egypt and the Palestinian Authority.
“We are a peaceful movement that does not believe in military solutions or violence and thuggery,” Abu Ruk said in the video. “We believe in freedom and will continue to work toward ending the rule of oppression and division.”
