The Southern District Attorney’s office announced on Monday that it is suing in civil court three defendants convicted and sentenced to prison terms for stealing gasoline from IDF bases.

The district attorney filed a NIS 1 million civil lawsuit in the Kiryat Gat Magistrate’s Court against the three men, who were convicted in a criminal trial last July and sentenced to various prison terms and fines.

In a move that a spokesman for the state attorney’s office dubbed “part of the state’s battle against crime,” the civil suit asks the court to order the three men to compensate the state for the stolen gasoline with the amount of NIS 1 million plus interest.

According to the criminal indictment, between 2009 and 2011, Baruch Kadosh, Ilan Kadosh and Morris Barbi, all from Beersheba, broke into IDF bases and stole “Pazomat” computerized fueling devices from a total of 15 different army vehicles.

The Pazomat system is installed on a car’s fuel entry point, and connects to a computer system ran by the Paz gas company.

When Pazomat customers fill up with gas at Paz stations, they do not have to pay at the pump but instead are automatically charged from their customer account.

The three defendants reinstalled the stolen Pazomat apparatuses on eight different cars and used them to steal large quantities of gasoline from various Paz stations, the indictment says.

One of the three defendants dressed up in an army uniform when he entered the IDF bases to steal the fueling devices, and fraudulently passed himself off as a reserve soldier, according to the indictment.

The three defendants stole gasoline worth NIS 991,677 in this way, the civil suit says.

Currently, Baruch Kadosh and Ilan Kadosh are both serving eight years in prison for the offenses, and Barbi is serving a three-year term.
