The National Council for Construction and Planning approved a plan on Tuesday to build a detention center in the South to hold illegal African migrants.
The facility will allocate only 4.5 square meters to each detainee, the council said.
According to the Defense Ministry, the project will cost NIS 250 million and will begin detaining migrants within a few months.
The detention center will be built on a “campus model,” with an emphasis on “the maintenance of community life,” the ministry said.
It will include classrooms, computer labs, kindergartens, medical centers, hair salons, and sports and recreation areas.
The facility will house detainees in sections according to their place of origin. Religious and community centers will also be built on campus, the ministry said.
When construction is finished, the facility will be able to hold up to 11,000 detainees. The Interior Ministry estimates that there are around 50,000 illegal migrants from Africa in Israel.
The program is awaiting cabinet approval.
