Prisons Service seeking ‘study partner’ for Yigal Amir
State prosecutors say search is on for inmate who can study Jewish texts with Amir once every two weeks.

The Prisons Service is seeking a “suitable” inmate who can study Jewish texts with Yigal Amir, who is serving a life sentence for the murder of prime minister Yitzhak Rabin in 1995.In a statement given by state prosecutors to the High Court of Justice as a response to Amir’s appeal against his continued custody in solitary confinement at the Rimonim Prison near the Tel Mond junction, the state confirmed that the search was on for an inmate who could study once every two weeks with Amir.Ariel Atari, Amir’s attorney, launched the appeal on his client’s behalf against an April 5 ruling by the Central District Court in Petah Tikva, which ordered Amir to remain in solitary confinement for six months.The district court said Amir’s presence in the general prison population would pose a national security risk, as well as a threat to Amir’s own safety.According to state prosecutors, the Prisons Service offered Amir the opportunity of studying with a partner, and he refused the offer, before eventually accepting it.A Prisons Service source told The Jerusalem Post that the court statement on searching for a study partner was accurate.Amir is searching for a yeshiva graduate with a similar educational background, according to the state’s reply to the court.
