A judge in the Tel Aviv District Court sentenced a sex offender to 15 years in prison on Wednesday – almost five years after convicting him.
The defendant, who is in his 40s and who cannot be named, managed to flee to Argentina after his conviction in 2008, and was caught and extradited to Israel in November.
In 2008, the Tel Aviv District Court convicted the man of multiple counts of indecent acts against against his two daughters, his mother-in-law, his daughter- in-law and another woman.
Although the defendant was initially remanded into custody, during the trial the court agreed to his lawyer’s request to release him to house arrest. While waiting to be sentenced, the defendant asked to be permitted to leave the house to meet with his lawyer, but instead used the opportunity to flee to Europe using his brother’s passport. From Europe, he flew to Argentina.
Israeli authorities issued an international arrest warrant for the defendant and the Argentinian police launched an extensive manhunt, finally arresting him as he tried to cross from Argentina into Brazil.
In November 2008, the International Department of the State Attorney’s Office filed an extradition request, but the defendant appealed to the Supreme Court against the extradition decision. However, in September, the defendant told the Israeli authorities that he would agree to extradition proceedings.
In addition to the 15-year prison sentence, Judge David Mudrik also ordered the defendant to pay his two daughters each NIS 100,000 in compensation.
