Comrades, Comets claim cadets championships; Reds down Modi’in in finals opener; Taylor, Avishar, Sadeghi claim divisional crowns.

Baseball: Comrades, Comets claim cadets championships
The IAB cadets division split this year into two groups, the 8-team Older Cadets division (ages 15-16) and the 10-team Younger Cadets division (ages 13-14).
In the Older Cadets championship game, the third-place Tel Aviv Comrades upset the previously undefeated first-place Beit Shemesh Bombers 12-3 at the Baptist Village.
The Comrades ran the playoff gauntlet, winning three consecutive elimination games over a one-week period, including a 7-4 victory over last year’s champs, the Beit Shemesh Comets.
The senior title game started as a pitchers’ duel between Binyamin Mor of Beit Shemesh and Jotham Ben Amram of Tel Aviv, and after two innings the game remained scoreless.
The Bombers made several excellent plays in the field, including a nice catch by third baseman Shmuel Seidman on a hard line drive.
Tel Aviv broke the scoreless tie in the third inning, scoring four runs with three hits and two walks.
The key hit was a run-scoring double by catcher, Tal Erel. Beit Shemesh responded with a pair of runs in the bottom of the inning with Yehuda Joffe and Mor scoring on an infield single by Moshe Schwartz. The Bombers comeback was short-lived, however, as the Comrades extended their lead to 6-3 in the fourth inning when Mor was forced to leave with a sore elbow, and 9-3 in the fifth.
Erel relieved Ben Amram and escaped a bases-loaded jam to shut down the Bombers final scoring chance, as Tel Aviv recorded its first IAB cadets championship.
The Young Cadets championship was also played last week, at Kibbutz Gezer between the first-place Beit Shemesh Bombers, and the second-place Beit Shemesh Comets in a rematch of the 2010 cadets championship.
The Comets struck first, with Shlomo Lipman scoring on a sacrifice fly after leading the game off with a sharp single.
The Bombers tied the score in the bottom of the second on a RBI single up the middle by Binyamin Glanz.
The game remained knotted at one, as Lipman and Alex Posen engaged in a fantastic pitching duel, until the Comets scored three runs in the top of the sixth, including two that scored on a double by Yonatan Levin.
Lipman reached his maximum 95 pitches to close out the bottom of the sixth on a pop-up.
He struck out 10 Bombers during the game while yielding only three hits.
Elyashiv Segal relieved Lipman in the seventh inning, with the Comets leading 4-2.
Despite loading the bases, he managed to record the save, retiring the last Bomber batter on a strike-out that gave the Beit Shemesh Comets a fifth consecutive cadets championship.
Reds down Modi’in in finals opener
In the opening game of the best-of-three title series, the Jerusalem Reds used a lightning- quick start to beat Modi'in by the high score of 23- 12.
Jerusalem’s nine made use of an 18-run first inning, scoring 11 runs before the first out was made, to jump out to an insurmountable lead.
Modi’in jumped out to a 2- 0 lead in the top of the first inning, but Beni Friedman’s RBI double quickly got the Reds back into the game, and the team batted around twice before the inning was over.
The Jerusalem pitching trio of Orr Gottlieb, Yoni Alter and Amit Kurz had more trouble than usual, but each threw three innings in gaining the win.
Y. Alter picked up four hits and five RBIs for the victors.
Three other Jerusalem players had multiple-hit showings.
Noam Markose had three extra-base hits and three RBIs for Modi’in.
Ira Moskowitz was effective in his relief stint for the losers, holding the Reds scoreless for five innings until a five-run Jerusalem outburst in the seventh.
J. Alter and Jesse Sultanik each had a pair of hits for Modi’in.
“We gave up more runs than in any game this year,” commented Reds’ coach David Friedman, “but with our aggressive hitting today, and patient offense, things went in our direction. Modi’in is one tough team, and showed a lot of heart, so we really had to earn this win.”
The series continues on Thursday evening with Game 2. If Jerusalem wins, the Reds will win the league crown for the first time since Friedman coached them to the title in 2006. If Modi’in wins, the series will continue on to a third and deciding rubbermatch contest.
Golf: Taylor, Avishar, Sadeghi claim divisional crowns
With the beautiful course at the Ga’ash Golf Club in perfect playing conditions, the scoring was of a very high standard in the June Monthly Medal.
In the A division, Steve Taylor took home first place on net 68, followed by Cyril Kaufman on net 70.
Moolie Avishar captured the B division with a net 65 followed by Salomon Levy on net 66.
For a second month in a row, Jill Sadeghi won the C division on net 67 followed by Dani Levin on net 70.
Nearest-to-the pin prizes, sponsored by the Greenfield restaurant, went to Amos Aharoni and Alon Granot.
The Ga’ash Golf Club is proud of the fact that nearly 100 golfers will be taking part in the prestigious International Pairs Tournament next Tuesday.
The International Pairs is one of the jewels on the Ga’ash annual schedule and always brings provides pulsating drama and riveting action, with the proceedings usually not being decided until the final few strokes.
