Tennis: Pe’er down big to Wozniacki when rain hits at Wimbledon

Shahar Pe’er will have to mount a stunning comeback to avoid a firstround exit at Wimbledon on Tuesday after rain stopped play on Monday night with the Israeli trailing No. 16 seed Caroline Wozniacki 6-3, 2-0.Pe’er, ranked No. 78 in the world, gave the former world No. 1 a real run for her money in the first set, but squandered three break points in a pivotal seventh game and never recovered.Wozniacki clinched the first set by holding her serve to love and won the first two games of the second set before rain suspended play for the night with the score tied at 30-30 in the third game.Julia Glushko and Dudi Sela will begin their Wimbledon campaigns on Tuesday.Glushko (82) will be making her main draw debut at Wimbledon and will have the honor of doing so on Center Court when she comes up against last year’s finalist Sabine Lisicki (19) in the first match of the day.Lisicki has reached at least the quarterfinals in her past four appearances in Wimbledon, only losing to Marion Bartoli in the final last year.Sela (101) faces Mikhail Kukushkin (63) in the first round of the gentleman’s singles in the second match of the day on Court 9.Sela has been past the first round of a Grand Slam event only once since 2011, which was also the last year he won a match at Wimbledon.The Israeli beat Kukushkin in their one and only meeting last year in the final of the Challenger tournament in Astana, Kazakhstan.
