There is no doubt that walking in a city abroad is a wonderful experience, and sometimes it can be one of the highlights of your trip. The French even have a word for this pleasurable activity of aimless urban strolling: Flâner. But not every urban destination is equally suitable for walking. Some are easy to navigate, while others are too sprawling and challenging for continuous and comfortable wandering.
The free walking tours platform GuruWalk ranked the 100 best “walking cities” for 2026. So if you are into discovering destinations on foot – this is your list. By the way, although Tel Aviv and Jerusalem appear on the GuruWalk website, they did not make it into the top 100 list. However, our neighbor Cairo is definitely placed somewhere in the middle of the ranking.
Rome, Italy
At the top of the ranking stands Rome, one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe. Many come to visit it thanks to its iconic sites such as the ancient Colosseum. Many of the main sites are close to each other – and you can, for example, visit the Colosseum, the Trevi Fountain, and the Pantheon on foot in the same day.
Madrid, Spain
The capital of Spain offers a high concentration of sites nearby, such as Plaza Mayor, San Miguel Market, and the Royal Palace. The famous El Retiro Park also adds plenty of greenery to the bustling city.
Budapest, Hungary
Budapest charms its visitors thanks to its beautiful streets and central tourist sites, which are spread out in a way that makes them easy to reach on foot. The Széchenyi Baths are among the biggest attractions, drawing tens of thousands of visitors every month.
Prague, Czech Republic
In fourth place stands Prague, which hosts over 8 million visitors a year. It is known for historical sites such as the Old Town Square, the cathedral, and the Jewish Quarter – with most popular sites located less than a 30-minute walk from each other.
Lisbon, Portugal
Lisbon is one of the most enjoyable cities to walk in, with a compact city center and accessible sites. It has flat areas alongside steep hills that challenge even those who want a more vigorous walking experience.
Amsterdam, Netherlands
Amsterdam is better known as a city of cyclists, but it is also a wonderful city to explore on foot, along its beautiful streets and picturesque canals.
Porto, Portugal
This is already the second Portuguese city on the list. Porto excels in walkability – with the beautiful Ribeira district and other attractions near the city center. Here too, the urban hills pose quite a challenge.
London, United Kingdom
London maintains its place in the top ten, offering rich historical heritage, unique culture, and diverse neighborhoods that make every trip a different experience. In general, it is worth knowing that the United Kingdom has four cities on the list of 100: London, Edinburgh, Belfast, and Liverpool.
Berlin, Germany
Berlin, also beloved by many Israelis, brings 20th-century history to life through its diverse sites, and offers alongside all of this an abundance of green spaces, led by the famous Tiergarten park. It is easy to explore Berlin on foot, especially since many sites are located relatively close to each other.
