The Ministry of Defense on Sunday greeted the release of a State Comptroller's report on the "Harpaz Affair," and said that a criminal investigation must be
launched at once against those responsible.
"The publication of the
Harpaz report does not signify the end of the affair rather the beginning of the
legal clarification phase, in order to reach the truth of the affair and the
problems it has exposed. The report clarifies that this was a severe matter, one
of the most serious scandals we have seen. What is needed now is a criminal
investigation and a state committee of inquiry.”
The statement adds, “the
report details acts whose essence was a conspiracy to harm the political
appointment process, disruption of the legal process of appointing a chief of
staff, obstruction of justice, forgery, breach of trust, and conduct unbecoming
of an officer. This appears to be a clear case of criminal behavior on the part
of the Chief of Staff's bureau."
The statement also
says that the report presents former IDF Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. (res.) Gabi Ashkenazi 's leadership as “apparently criminal,”
and that he stood at the “head of the pyramid” that deployed Erez Viner
and Boaz Harpaz to carry out the subterfuge.
