A group of 30 rabbis and professors from the Montreal area sent visiting President Shimon Peres a letter Wednesday encouraging him to bring about the release of Israeli agent Jonathan Pollard.

In the letter, the rabbis and professors congratulated Peres for being awarded the US Presidential Medal of Freedom that US President Barack Obama will give him June 13 and expressed hope that Obama will accept Peres's appeal for Pollard's clemency.

"We would like to encourage you and to ask that you act according to the best of your abilities so that your appeal will be answered in the affirmative," the group wrote. "Mr. President, we all recognize that your efforts can bring about Jonathan's release and save his life. Please act in order to bring this terrible tragedy to an end."
