Former Hadassah oncologist hired at Shaare Zedek

Dr. Iris Fried, one of the six senior oncologists who resigned from Hadassah-University Medical Center’s pediatric hematology-oncology department in June, has been hired by Shaare Zedek Medical Center, also in the capital, to be responsible for its pediatric palliative medicine service.

Health Minister Ya’acov Litzman had tried to prevent the resigning doctors from working at other hospitals, especially at Shaare Zedek, telling government hospitals not to hire any of them, even though there are only 42 pediatric hematology- oncology specialists in the country. The reason for Litzman’s actions was that he had appointed Hadassah Medical Organization director-general Prof. Zeev Rotstein to carry out its recovery program and wanted to support him.

Most of the pediatric oncologists who left Hadassah in protest against Rotstein’s policies and behavior have started working as non-specialized pediatricians in health funds treating routine medical conditions.

While the High Court of Justice decided last week that Shaare Zedek may not open a pediatric hematology-oncology department to perform bone-marrow transplants from foreign donors on children with cancer, Fried can work to relieve pain of cancer children there.
